What is ad creative, and what is creative fatigue?

Ad creative is the ad itself: the image or video, the headline, the body text and the button, as distinct from the audience it is shown to and the budget behind it. Creative fatigue is what happens when the same people have seen that creative too many times, and it shows in the numbers before anyone notices it on the screen.

Why does the creative matter more than the targeting now?

Because the platforms took the targeting back. Meta's Advantage+ products and Google's Performance Max decide much of who sees an ad from the signals the ad itself produces: who stops, who clicks, who buys. The creative is the input that steers them. Two ad sets with the same budget and audience and different creative can finish a month with a cost per result a long way apart, and the gap is the creative. Meta's own guidance to advertisers has said as much since 2022: creative is the largest lever an advertiser still holds.

For an owner-led business this is good news. Targeting was the part that needed an expert. Creative is the part where knowing your own customers wins, and a phone video of the owner explaining the offer regularly beats a designed graphic.

How do you see fatigue in the numbers? (example figures)

A Sunshine Coast landscaper runs one video ad to homeowners within 30 km at $25 a day. The ad is good. Four weeks in, the same budget buys fewer enquiries each week, and the pattern is in three columns of Ads Manager.

WeekFrequencyClick-through rateCost per enquiryEnquiries
11.62.1 percent$1810
22.71.6 percent$257
33.91.1 percent$394
45.20.7 percent$583

Frequency climbing while the click-through rate falls and the cost per result rises is the signature. Nothing about the audience changed. The people in it had simply seen the video five times. In week four Ads Manager labelled the ad creative limited, which is Meta reporting the same three columns back.

The early warning

Frequency up, click-through rate down, cost per result up, in the same week

What do you change, and what do you leave alone?

Change the creative, not the campaign. A new ad in the same ad set keeps the audience, the budget and the learning Meta has done, and gives the same people something they have not seen. The landscaper added two new videos, one of a finished garden walked through at dusk and one of the crew on a job, and the week after, the cost per enquiry was back near $20 with the budget unchanged.

Leave the audience and the budget alone unless the audience itself is exhausted, which shows as reach that stopped growing weeks ago. Rebuilding the ad set resets Meta's learning phase and usually costs more than the fatigue did. And resist the urge to pause the tired ad the day a new one starts: let Meta shift the spend, which it does within a few days.

What makes creative last longer?

Variety at the start. Three to five ads that are different in kind, a video, a still of the result, a customer's words over a photo, rather than one idea cropped five ways, so Meta rotates and no single ad burns through the audience. A first second that earns the second: a question, the finished result, a face talking to camera. An audience large enough for the budget, because $25 a day into 8,000 people fatigues in a fortnight and into 80,000 it takes months. And a calendar reminder to look at frequency every week, which is the one habit that catches it early.

What does Cora do with ad creative?

CoraVision reads your Meta and Google Ads campaigns every night once they are connected, with impressions, clicks and results, so a click-through rate that has fallen for three weeks on the same spend is visible in the numbers without anyone opening a report. During a session, Cora sees Ads Manager on your screen, frequency column included, and Mira, the Meta Ads specialist, reads the three columns together with you. When the fix is new creative, Dune, the creative director, designs the next ad in your brand in the Design Studio, and you place it in the ad set yourself.

Questions

How many ads should be running in one ad set?

Three to five with real differences between them, not five crops of the same photo. Meta's delivery system spends more on the ones that work, and when one tires, another is already there to carry the spend.

Does changing the headline count as new creative?

To the person seeing it, barely. A new image or a new video with a different first second counts; the same picture with new words is the same ad to someone scrolling past it for the ninth time.

Why does Meta say my ad is creative limited?

Ads Manager shows a creative limited or creative fatigue status when it sees the pattern itself: rising frequency, falling results, and a cost per result climbing past what the ad set used to manage. It is Meta telling you what the numbers were already saying.
