Google Ads for owner-led businesses

Google Ads can be the fastest way to buy customers, or the fastest way to burn money. The difference is almost never the budget. It's structure: knowing what you're trying to achieve, how the platform actually spends your money, and which numbers tell you the truth. This guide keeps it plain.

What Google Ads actually is

Google Ads lets you pay to appear when someone searches for what you sell (Search), across Google's wider network and formats (Performance Max, Display, YouTube), and for shopping listings (via Merchant Center). For most owner-led businesses, the money and the meaning start with Search: someone types a need, and you can be the answer. The skill isn't clicking buttons, it's making sure you only pay for the searches that can become customers, and that you can see which ones did.

Where owners quietly waste money

Three leaks account for most wasted spend. First, no conversion tracking, if Google can't see which clicks became leads or sales, it optimises toward clicks, not customers. Second, broad targeting with no negatives, you pay for searches that were never going to buy. Third, judging the wrong metric, celebrating a low cost-per-click while the cost-per-customer climbs. Fixing these three is usually worth more than any clever new campaign.

The numbers that matter

Ignore vanity metrics. The ones that matter to an owner are cost per acquisition (what a customer costs you), conversion rate (how often a click becomes a customer), and return on ad spend (revenue for every dollar in). Everything else is a means to those ends. If a change doesn't move one of these in the right direction, it isn't working, no matter how good the dashboard looks.
