Strategy and the plan

What is a call to action?

A call to action (CTA) is the part of your marketing that tells people what to do next: "Book a service", "Get a fixed-price quote", "Call now". Without one, an interested reader has to work out the next step alone, at the exact moment they were ready to take it.

What makes a call to action work?

It starts with a verb and says what happens next. "Get my quote in 2 minutes" tells the reader the action, the reward and the effort, while "Submit" tells them none of it. It matches how ready the reader is: someone who found you a minute ago is not ready to book a $9,000 ducted system, but may well ask for a fixed price.

And there is one main action per page, ad or email, repeated where it helps, so nobody has to choose between four buttons. Google Ads' own advice on writing search ads recommends including a call to action, and Meta offers a set call-to-action button on most of its ad formats.

Where do the buttons live on Google and Meta?

On Meta, the button under an ad comes from a fixed list that includes Book now, Get quote, Learn more, Shop now and Call now. Pick the one closest to the action you want. On Google, the call to action sits in the ad text itself, and assets add more ways to act: a call asset puts your phone number on the ad, and a lead form asset lets people enquire without leaving Google. Your Google Business Profile has buttons of its own for calling, directions and your website.

How many more enquiries does one clear button bring an air-conditioning installer? (example figures)

An air-conditioning installer in Mackay gets about 1,200 visits a month to its split-system page. The page ends with three buttons ("Learn more", "Our range" and "Contact us") and brings in 18 enquiries a month, 1.5 percent of visits. The installer replaces them with one button, "Get a fixed-price quote in 2 minutes", placed at the top and again after the price guide.

Same visitors, same ad spend, $15,200 more work in the month. Nothing about the air conditioners changed. The page asked once, clearly, at the point where people were ready.

Can a call to action push too hard?

Yes, and in Australia the line is a legal one. Urgency that is not true, such as a countdown timer that resets or "only 2 left" when there are 40, can be misleading under the Australian Consumer Law, which the ACCC enforces. A call to action works by making the next step easy and the reward clear. Invented pressure costs trust, and sometimes a good deal more.

Does CoraVision count what your buttons bring in?

Yes: CoraVision counts what your calls to action produce. Once connected, it reads the key events in Google Analytics 4, which is where a quote form or booking button is counted once it is set up as a key event, along with conversions in Google Ads and results in Meta. For a business that wins work through enquiries, the dashboard's Google Ads and Meta cards show the last 7 days of leads and cost per acquisition. When a page needs a clearer button, Cora shows you where on your own screen and you make the change.

Questions

What are good words for a call-to-action button?

The verb for what they get, plus a hint of what happens: "Get my quote", "Book a 30-minute visit", "Check my roof size". Avoid words that describe your side of it, such as "Submit" or "Send", and keep it short enough to fit on a phone screen.

Should a call to action say free?

Only if it is free, with no catch in the fine print. The ACCC's guidance is that a "free" offer must not hide costs or conditions that make it something less than free. A quote that costs nothing and commits the customer to nothing is one of the strongest offers you can put on a button.
