Marketing measurement plan: the minimum viable version

A marketing measurement plan is the measurement layer of a marketing plan. It states what business decision the evidence must support, how a conversion is defined, where source and customer outcome data live, and when an owner will review it.

Direct answer

Start with the business decision: Write “we need to decide whether to…” and name continue, change, pause, test or repair measurement. This is narrower than a general marketing plan and different from a broad marketing audit.

Define one meaningful conversion

Choose the business action that matters for this decision: qualified enquiry, booked appointment, completed order or customer at a defined stage. Write what counts, what does not, who owns the definition and how timing is handled.

Capture source and customer outcome

Use a worksheet with source, campaign or referral, conversion date, customer identifier, status, value or contribution view, confidence and notes. The marketing conversion tracking guide covers the minimum path; the plan records the agreed operating rule.

Set the review cadence

Name a quick capture check, a meaningful outcome review and a date to revisit assumptions. Decide who prepares the evidence and who chooses the action. Keep unknown, estimated and verified fields distinct.

Use incomplete data deliberately

If a source is missing, do not invent it. Add a missing-data category, explain the likely effect, choose a bounded tracking repair or narrower decision, and record when it will be reviewed. Marketing attribution for small business helps keep the model modest.

Frequently asked questions

Is a measurement plan the same as a marketing plan?

No. A marketing plan sets direction and activity; a measurement plan defines how you will know what happened and what decision follows.

How many metrics should it contain?

Only the measures needed for the chosen outcome and decision. Definitions belong with the marketing metrics guide, not in an ever-growing plan.

What if we have no CRM?

Start with a consistent enquiry or order record and a named reconciliation step. Improve the system as the decision requires it.
