Marketing ROI calculator: a transparent worksheet

A marketing ROI calculator is useful when it makes the inputs and assumptions visible. It should help you decide what to investigate or do next, not produce a precise-looking verdict from incomplete attribution.

Direct answer

Define the outcome and period: Write the decision first: continue, change, pause, or measure better. Choose one outcome such as completed orders or qualified customers, then set a period and keep it consistent. This keeps the worksheet distinct from a marketing budget allocation exercise.

Gather the inputs

Record included spend, production and tool costs, relevant owner time if you choose to count it, enquiries or orders, customers, and revenue or contribution. Note refunds, discounts, cancellations and fulfilment treatment. A platform conversion is not automatically a customer.

Fill in the worksheet

Use fields for period, activity, included investment, conversions, customers, recognised revenue, excluded costs, source confidence, and next decision. If you cannot verify a field, mark it unknown or estimated. The marketing conversion tracking guide covers the path from enquiry or purchase back to source.

Calculate and label assumptions

In words, ROI compares the return you attribute to the investment you include. If you use revenue, state that; if you use contribution, state the margin and cost boundary. Illustrative example: if a deliberately defined activity is assigned $4,000 of contribution after $1,000 of included investment, the worksheet shows a 300% return on that defined view. It is not a benchmark and does not prove the activity caused every dollar.

Interpret without over-crediting marketing

Compare the result with customer quality, timing, follow-up, repeat behaviour and missing sources. Read marketing attribution for small business before treating a last touch as the whole journey, and use marketing ROI reporting to turn the result into a recurring decision.

Frequently asked questions

Can a calculator prove marketing caused revenue?

No. It can organise a defined view of return. Attribution gaps, seasonality, sales work and repeat demand still need judgement.

Should I use revenue or profit?

Use the outcome that matches the decision, but state the boundary. Contribution may be more useful than gross revenue when variable costs matter.

Is this the same as a marketing metrics dashboard?

No. Metrics describe signals; the calculator connects selected inputs to an outcome and an action.
